Editorial Assistant

Position Summary:
The Editorial Assistant will provide editorial and related clerical support for two Sponsoring Editors in the Science Publishing Group. The Assistant will secure expert readings of proposals and manuscripts, maintain database of readers/advisors; order books for authors, correspond with authors, editorial committee members, process contracts, payments and reimbursements. Research sales figures from other publishers.
Prepare manuscripts for launch: Complete of manuscript inventory; track missing components; check for problems in preparation of manuscript; tag and inventory art for illustrated books; if needed; prepare manuscript castoff and revise financial plan as directed by editors; for illustrated books, review permissions status and completeness of manuscript and art program. Review jacket and catalogue copy. Arrange for promotional blurbs.
Assist in preparing manuscripts for editing, design, and typesetting; check permissions; correspond with authors; schedule editors, proofreaders, and indexers; copyedit jacket copy and indexes; transfer corrections on proofs; proofread reset lines, indexes, and jacket mechanicals; check proofs for satisfactory execution of design and page markup; handle some "clean-up editing".
Position Requirements:
Education equivalent to high school graduation and three years experience providing administrative support in a publishing or academic environment (focus on scholarly publishing); or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
General knowledge of basic editorial principles and methods in order to assist in preparing manuscripts for editing, design, and typesetting, and launch.
Working knowledge of and experience performing standard office procedures and processes, travel planning, and forms processing.
Proven excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills with knowledge of proper formats.
Demonstrated verbal skills to communicate clearly and logically using appropriate grammar and vocabulary during telephone, electronic mail, and in-person interactions with individuals both internal and external to UC Press.
Excellent attention to detail, as demonstrated by regularly verifying all work thoroughly to ensure accuracy.
Demonstrated ability to adapt and react quickly and appropriately to an office environment of rapidly changing priorities.
Proven organizational skills to complete work in an accurate and timely manner under pressure of deadlines, and to effectively balance the needs of more than one supervisor.
Experience within a Macintosh operating environment and proficiency with Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel). Knowledge and/or experience
